Santiago Churches Free Walking Tour
Tour Details
At the designated time, we'll meet in front of the San Francisco Church, the oldest church in Santiago, to begin this free walking tour of the main churches in the Chilean capital.
We'll visit the Iglesia de San Agustín, home to the enigmatic Cristo de Mayo, also known as the Lord of the Earthquakes. This historic image is surrounded by legends and mysteries that are part of the soul of colonial Santiago.
Our tour will continue by stopping at the site of the former Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús. During a religious celebration in 1863, the church was consumed by flames, resulting in the deaths of more than two thousand people in one of the greatest urban tragedies of the 19th century in the Americas.
Afterward, we will marvel at the majestic Santiago Cathedral, located in the heart of the Plaza de Armas. This imposing church, dating back to the 18th century, is the main Catholic church in Chile and has withstood numerous earthquakes throughout the centuries. Inside, we'll admire its beautiful stained-glass windows, the main altar, and the crypt where the city's archbishops are laid to rest.
We'll also learn about the myth of the supposed mass graves hidden beneath the cathedral and discover the mysterious monument dedicated to the heroes of the Battle of La Concepción, one of the most symbolic and moving stories in the history of the Chilean army.
Finally, after a 2-hour tour, we'll say goodbye in the center of Santiago.
